How to Handle a Tooth Emergency

If you are experiencing a dental emergency, you may be extremely scared and worried. Most people do not know what to do in these times and will panic. We do not want you to do this. Please find some more information below about the steps you should take when you experience a dental emergency.

Broken and Fractured Teeth – Breaks and fractures can occur at any time and when they do, it is important that you do not touch them or mess with them, as this can cause the break to complete or the fracture to get worse. You should call our office right away when this occurs.

Wisdom Tooth – Wisdom teeth can hurt now and again, especially when they are impacted. You want to make sure you call us to have your teeth looked at immediately.

Abscesses – Abscesses may be tempting to pop, but do not do it as it can lead to an infection in your mouth. You will need to come in for an appointment to have the abscess properly drained.

Lacerations and Cuts in the Mouth – If you have a cut or laceration in your mouth, you want to clean it thoroughly and then give us a call if the cut is deep or needs medical attention. If you experience a lot of bleeding, you should place gauze over the wound and seek immediate medical attention for it.

Loose Teeth – Loose teeth are concerning as well and may be caused due to trauma or even gum disease. If you find that your tooth is loose, do NOT wiggle it and do NOT try to remove it. Give our team a call and we will set you up with an appointment.

Knocked Out Tooth – If your tooth has been knocked out, it is important that you do not touch the root of the tooth. You do need to recover the tooth and place it back into the socket or into a cup of milk. Call our office immediately, so that we can see you the same day.

Tooth Decay – Tooth decay is scary, but more common than you think. When it is allowed to progress, you will find that it starts to hurt and bother your teeth. If you believe that you have tooth decay, call us and let us know. Dr. Sohn will look at your teeth and identify any areas of concern. Typically, tooth decay is corrected with a filling or a crown.
