Healthy Mouth Tips

Dental implants have become one of the most popular dental procedures because they mimic natural teeth the best. The reason they are so durable is because they are made from titanium and they are implanted into the jaw bone itself. The crowns are not placed onto the pot until it has fully healed and is anchored in the jaw. Titanium is known to have an affinity with bone, so therefore, new cells will begin to grow and then adhere to the dental implants naturally over time.

Before you can enjoy dental implants, you will need to undergo a dental implant procedure. This procedure does involve the surgical implantation of the posts into the jaw bone. This surgical procedure is one of the reasons why patients will NOT choose this treatment option. In fact, many patients are scared of the procedure. While it may seem like a huge undertaking and scary in nature, dental implant surgery is actually very routine and causes little discomfort to you and have a high rate of success.

Check Out These Three Reasons as to WHY You Don’t Need to Fear the Surgical Procedure

1. The procedure is planned out before it takes place.

Implant surgery is not considered to be major surgery, but more like minor surgery. This is because the entire procedure is mapped out before you undergo any type of procedure. For situations where there is more complexity, Dr. Sohn will use digital x-rays or CT imaging to precisely determine the location for every single implant. A surgical guide will be used and Dr. Sohn will make the necessary cuts in accordance with the guide.

2. You only need local anesthesia for the procedure to be performed.

One surprising fact about the procedure is that it is actually considered to be easier than a tooth extraction. If you are healthy and your oral health is on point, the procedure will go as smoothly as possible and there will not be any hiccups in the road. Dr. Sohn will provide you with a local anesthetic in our Denver, CO office before the procedure begins.

If you are worried about the procedure or you think that you will experience anxiety, talk to us today and let us know. We can accommodate your needs and general anesthesia may be available for you.

3. Discomfort after the procedure is very minimal.

While you may think that a procedure like this would cause a lot of pain, it does not. In fact, you will experience minimal discomfort. There is little disruption to your jaw and tissues during the process. Any tissues that have been cut will be stitched back together using self-absorbing sutures.

Often times, you will only need to take an over-the-counter pain reliever, but some patients may need stronger pain medications, which Dr. Sohn will prescribe if needed. The implant site itself will heal quickly and has a success rate of 95 to 97 percent. Once the bone has been integrated with the post, a crown will be attached to the top and your smile will be bold and beautiful.

The Dental Implant Procedure: A Quick Overview

Many people worry about the dental implant surgical procedure, but there really is nothing to worry about. The team here at C.S. Family dental want you to know that we are here for you and will keep you as comfortable as possible in our Denver office. Below, we will quickly explore the procedure to give you a better idea of what to expect.

1 Pre-Surgery

Prior to the surgical procedure starting, you will come into our Denver office and have an examination performed. This exam will let Dr. Sohn know if you are a good candidate for the procedure. You will receive x-rays or CT imaging performed, so that a surgical guide can be mapped out.

If you do have anxiety about this procedure, now is the time to talk about your options and find out if there are alternative sedatives available for you. Sometimes, local anesthesia is not enough for patients and you may require general anesthesia.

2. Surgery

During the surgical procedure, you will undergo site preparation first. This is where a small hole will be formed in the jaw bone to accommodate the post. Small incisions are made into the gum tissue so that Dr. Sohn can see the bone itself.

The next step is to actually make the hole using a sequences of drilling procedures to create it. Once the hole is made, the implants will be inserted into the fitted hole. Once all of the implants are in place, an x-ray will be taken to ensure that all of them are in the correct position.

The cut gum tissue will then be sutured back together and you will be given instructions to come back into the office in a couple of weeks to check on the progress.

3. Post-Surgery

There is a very high success rate with dental implants and you are likely to experience a highly successful procedure. You will need to allow the bone time to heal, so do not expect this procedure to be fully completed in a week or two. Many patients have their new smile in about six months. You may need to take over the counter medication to help with pain and swelling once the procedure is done, but you do not need to expect to experience intense pain of any type.
